Some Very Interesting Facts about the Granville Area - Did
You Know?
- The first slate deposits were discovered in 1839 and the roof of a barn, one mile south
of Fair Haven VT, was the first to be covered with slate in 1848. The barn is still
standing today and the same slate roof is intact.
- Evergreen Slate Company, Inc. was Established in 1916.
- One of the Victorian Homes Previewed in the book "America's Painted Ladies : The
Ultimate Celebration of Our Victorians by Elizabeth Pomada, " is located on Main
Street in Granville NY.
- Dave Hicks, owner of DC Hicks Inc., exports Ginseng from this area to Hong Kong as part
of a long family tradition.
- Hicks Orchard, located in Granville NY, is the oldest U-pick orchard in NYS, they have been in existence since 1895, selling their first
upick cherries in 1905.
- Thistle Downs Wildlife Artistry, is one of the top Award Winning Taxidermists east of
the Mississippi and they are located right here in Granville NY.
- The South Granville Congregational Church has sustained an active congregation
continuously since 1790.
- The Historic E. R. Norton Home, located on West Main Street, was built in the early
1900s by Granvilles most prominent Slate Baron. The three story Victorian
Mansion is now the Hewitt Memorial Masonic Temple.
- Granville has a Dog Tracking Service owned by Tim Nichols. He is one of the few people
Licensed by the state of NY and VT to track wounded bear and deer. His Bloodhound is
trained to find people and his Beagle has tracked down 12 wounded deer this year alone.
- Sheldon Slate Products Co. of Granville produced the Monson Black Slate Gravestone for
the graves of President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Although many
people thought her gravestone to be marble or granite, we are here to set the record
Straight It is polished black Slate!
- Granville Small & Large Animal Veterinary Clinic was first Opened in the fall of
1946 by Phil Liebig DVM.
- Granville Pharmacy located on Main Street in Granville NY is one, of only three
Pharmacies from Albany NY to Rutland VT that offers "The Modern Art of Compounding
".
- During the late 1800s the Penrhyn Mantel & Slate Co. Established in 1865 and
located in Middle Granville, produced Marbleized Slate Fireplaces which were sold in
the Sears and Roebuck Catalog. They can still be found in Victorian Homes through out the
United States.
- The Village Streets of Granville were lit with
electricity for the first time on Thursday evening, January 23, 1896 with three Arc
lights of 2,000 candle power and 100 incandescent lamps of 25 candle power for the price
